Burn the Ships
Do you have something that you can’t let go of? Something that is all too familiar and all too comfortable for you to give up on and move forward? An addiction? A toxic relationship? A bad habit? Whatever the case may be, Jesus called us to lay down our burdens and he will carry us through them.
There is a famous story of a Spanish man named Cortes who began exploring new land. One day he called his soldiers to the shoreline from the ships and he told them “We are going to go out and explore this new land and it will be great”, but all they wanted to do was go back to the ship. So the next day he called every single soldier to the shore and ordered his generals to burn every ship. He then turned to his soldiers and said “We will explore this new land and we will not go back. We will press forward.”
How amazing is that? He had that much faith that everything would be okay after they got off those boats. Jesus didn’t say “Maybe give me your burdens and I will sustain you.” NO. He said
“I have made YOU. I will CARRY you. I will SUSTAIN you and I will RESCUE you.” (Isaiah 46:4)
If you’re familiar with the band For King and Country, then you’ve heard their song “Burn the Ships”. It has become a song I play daily for myself. Hearing Luke explain why they wrote that song and how impactful it had been was beautiful. He described the time when his wife was pregnant with their middle son and she had the worst nausea possible so they went to the doctor and were able to get some medicine to help it. Within 6 weeks the medicine stopped working and they again returned to the doctor just for them to up the dosage.
A little time passed and while he was doing a show in Texas she called him home saying she needed him. When he arrived home they agreed to go to the doctor the next morning and before bed she said ‘If i take another pill it'll stop and we can wait to go’ and he noticed her hand was shaking horribly. She had become addicted to these simple pills. After she spent a couple of weeks in therapy, she came home and told her husband “I need to flush the pills. I need to see them leave”, and that was it. She flushed them and moved on. She put her faith in God and was able to see the future without returning to something that made her feel safe.
The lord doesn’t want us stuck in the place we are in just because it's comfortable. He wants us to grow and to prosper, and to be more than we are each day.
“For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you. Do Not Fear; I will help you.” (Isaiah 41:13)
So why do we wait? Why do we sit still knowing we could move into something better that God has for us? So I ask you again; What is stopping you? Where are you stuck in life that you can't seem to break free of? (1 Peter 1:6) “So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead. Even though you have to endure many trials for a little while.” Yes there will be trials. Yes there will be hard times as you’re moving forward. But I encourage you to burn the ships! Let go of what's holding you in that spot of comfortability. Press on to what God has in store for you, for your family, for your friends, for your life. Burn the Ships, my friends, and let’s move forward together!
